Flight
Flight is the debut collection catalogue of UK-based artist, writer, and theologian Theodora Songhai - nine analogue photomontages made with scissors, glue, and magazines during a period of homelessness in London in 2022–2023.
This is art made from necessity. Inspired by Audre Lorde's essay 'Poetry Is Not A Luxury', Songhai understood that making was not an indulgence but a lifeline - and that the absence of a studio, materials, or a fixed address was no reason not to begin. The small scale of these works is a deliberate political statement: solidarity with every artist for whom a dedicated studio is a privilege rather than a given.
Flight is more than a mere theme; it embodies the human spirit’s limitless ability for movement, transformation, and endurance.
The collection moves through themes of migration, belonging, identity, the body, emancipation, and hope - drawing on Songhai's Ghanaian-Nigerian heritage, her childhood across four African countries, her formation as a theologian, and her lifelong inquiry into what it means to search for home. Songhai charts an artistic path that reflects shared human challenges while honouring personal resilience.
In Theodora Songhai’s work, the concept of flight - much like a migrating bird - serves as a metaphor for the quest for belonging, identity, and elevation. These intricate collages, rich with vibrant textures and meaningful symbols, unveil complex stories of home, displacement, and nature.
